2009 Reflections x Radio Show Broadcast Week Of December 28, 2009...

2009 was a good year for the show and website. There were several ups and downs, mistakes made, lessons learned, and growth opportunities. I appreciate all the labels, artists and media outlets that reach out on a regular basis.

Special shoutout to Randy Roper of Ozone Magazine {with the Where Is Hip Hop? segment}, Mr. Shadeed The Digital Guru {with the Hip Hop Bytes segment}, and DJ Mista Soull of The Crowd Rocka DJs {with The Midwest Report segment} for their continued support of the show and endeavors.

From day one The Nanci O Radio Show has been and continues to be for the listeners and what they want to hear. Email feedback is read, shared with station management and taken into consideration. Many folks reach out regularly about missing the show and wanting to know where and when they can catch rebroadcasts.

Beginning today, each week the online broadcast will be posted here on the site for listening and download. Stay tuned for more news coming soon concerning the show. Also mark your calendars for Sohipotome {2nd Annual Women In Hip Hop Radio, Honors Concert event} coming March 11-13, 2010.

Thank you for your support!

'Free Spirit Of A Troubled Soul' (Album Preview)--Scholar Man...

Full album drops 1/5/2010.

Run That Back: ScholarMan's 'Reap Sew'.

'The Cold Case Files'--Darien Brockington...

Ever since the grimy award winning documentary Welcome To Durham was released a few years back, people living outside of the Bull City have developed a sense that nothing exists here but gang members, whoo riders and cap bustas. Every time I tell folks I'm based in Durham, NC people are like "woah, how can you live around there son?" Granted the city does have a recent history of unsavory activities but to quote the always eloqent Shawty Lo, "Must Be Two Sides."

In Durham, NC there exists a thriving and rich music scene in both the hip hop and r&b/soul communities. 2010 Grammy nominees The Foreign Exchange, vocalists
Yazarah and Carlitta Durand, emcee Pierce Freelon {son of Grammy nominated jazz singer Nnena Freelon--who is also based here}, hip hop band The Beast {NC's version of The Roots}, The Bull City Slam Team {one of the nation's top ranked poetry teams} and vocalist Darien Brockington are all based in or have been based in the area. Despite the negative light Durham is bathed in, The Bull City continues to rise.

D. Brock hit the scene back in 2006 with his debut album Somebody To Love. Before and since then he's worked heavily with Little Brother, The Justus League, The Foreign Exchange, Detroit's Zo! and many others. The Cold Case Files is his latest album to drop; as expected is pure dope and features production from local producer
E. Jones. You can stream the full album on Darien Brockington's website and purchase an e-version for $5.

'The Revival'--Groundbreaking Women In Hip Hop Tour Documentary...

"The Revival gives a candid glimpse into the first meeting of legendary Hip-Hop pioneer Roxanne Shante and veteran Philly emcee Bahamadia, as they trade stories of their struggles and triumphs in the industry over their long careers. It also shows the exchange of lessons between them and up and coming artists DJ Shortee, Eternia, Stacy Epps, and Invincible. This short documentary, a collage of performances and behind the scenes footage, was filmed and directed by Invincible while on the road in Europe as part of We-B Girlz all women in independent Hip-Hop tour. The largest all female Hip-Hop tour of its kind, it spanned over three weeks, six countries, and featured dozens of female artists who performed for tens of thousands of supporters."

Glennisha, owner of
The Fembassy {the #1 site on the web for female rappers, their projects & business endeavors} and my sister in the love of hip hop and blogging, will also be featuring weekly interviews with the artists from The Revival on her website.

The Fembassy is also one of the sponsors for Sohipotome, the Women In Hip Hop Radio, Honors and Concert event coming March 11-13, 2010, taking place in Durham/Chapel Hill, NC.

December Feature Night Thursday Rewind...

As stated before, feature night Thursdays are my favorite. It happens only once a month so that makes it super special in my book. A couple folks reached out and wondered why the Hip Hop Christmas special from last year didn't repeat; after some debates with the station we decided to switch it up this year. So this month we featured some of my top/favorite tracks from 2009, being that it was the end of the year and all.

Anyway check out some listener feedback, peep
last week's playlist and keep those tracks rolling in; the next feature night Thursday is January 14.

The listeners love hearing fresh new music on feature night Thursdays and so do I. Email .mp3s {clean/radio edits}: thenancioradioshow@gmail.com.

Heya Nanci,
Just writing to say great show. I'm sure glad I was driving home when your show came on. You've got one of the tightest sets I've heard on a specialty show. Your love of hip-hop is obvious and you have awesome taste.

Your shows are a must-hear for me, I am always hungry for new hip-hop and my sources are few.
Anyway, I hope you keep doing this forever. WXYC needs you!

On Point Magazine Interview...

On Point Magazine interviewed me last month about the show, my Carolina grind and more. Many thanks to Bobby and the rest of the magazine staff for the opportunity, it's a honor for folks to take the time out to showcase your work through their respective media outlet.

Nanci O “Broadcasting Loud and Clear” Interview:

On Point Magazine: How did you get started in radio and how did you come up with the Nanci O show?
Nanci O: I got started in radio while attending school at UNC-Chapel Hill. The local radio station was looking for radio DJs, I went to an audition and got hired. After being on air for 9 months there was an opening for the station business manager. I applied for the job and was hired. That was my very first taste of the business side of radio and the music industry and wanted to find a way to articulate what I was learning into an entity that I own and could grow. I came up with the Nanci O Radio Show because I wanted the opportunity to combine the love & respect I had for hip hop along with the business platform. Since the beginning one goal is of the show has been to deliver a professional, high quality, engaging and entertaining radio broadcast that features the newest and best of hip hop and R&B music.

On Point Magazine: Do you feel its still harder to make it in the music business as a woman? Do you think it’s getting better?

'Dry Humpin2:Diary Of A Ashy Band'...

This "r&b group" (term used loosely here) has been hitting me up for months about their "projects." Based off name alone I'm thinking these ninjas gotta be kidding.

Then today an
official press release along with their 2nd mixtape (I missed the first? *good*) popped into the instant box communicator. More than anything I'm more hurt they took the time to try to tarnish Jodeci's legacy like that.
Let them Hailey boys be great, personal demons and all.

The Foreign Exchange's Grammy Nomination Video...

I remember when the group formerly known as Little Brother used to rock a lil club down in Chapel Hill, NC called The Hideaway back in 2001.

From cozy holes in the walls to the Grammy's, now that's what I call a progressive, steady grind:

"We haven't come forward with a personal press release or statement of any kind because truthfully, the past week has been a whirlwind of events and its taken us awhile to really wrap our heads around all that's happened.

Needless to say, we are both filled with feelings of shock, wonder, amazement, nervousness, humility, and extreme gratitude.

We have prepared a short video (with the help of our frequent collaborator Matt Koza), that describes the FE story and gives an overview of our journey from random obscurity to fully independent Grammy nominated artists. Consider this our pre-Grammy acceptance speech...lol. We encourage all of you to pass this along and spread the word, as we feel our story is a big inspiration to artists everywhere. Every once in a blue moon, the good guys do win.

We thank all of you for our continued support, and wish you a safe and blessed holiday season.

Peace,
'Te and Nic"

'Renaissance Man' Leaks--Young Scolla...

I typically fall back from blogging during feature night week cause so much always seems to goes on leading up to Thursday. I take time out to listen to an extreme amount of new tracks for the playlist. As word gets out the inbox pops off and before I know it it's Thursday. This time around exceptions will be made because there's a good amount of dopeness being released.

From one of my fav's coming out of Detroit comes a leak off
